A Message from Our Exectuive Director
By now, I am sure many have heard the recent controversy surrounding Susan G. Komen and the subsequent amendment of the grant funding criteria policy. Nothing has changed with local funding for breast cancer services throughout the Komen Greater Fort Worth service area.
Komen Greater Fort Worth is dedicated to serving the breast health needs of all women, men and families regardless of age, race, gender or socioeconomic status. Our top priority is to continue to fund local programs with the best outcomes and community impact we can provide. We will continue to do this, as we have for 20 years, by working in collaboration with excellent direct service providers and demonstrating role model performance that deserves your trust and loyalty.
Since inception, the Greater Fort Worth Affiliate has invested more than $17 million through grants to local nonprofits providing breast cancer screening, treatment and education for the medically underserved.

We select our grant programs based on the specific needs of our service area. Komen Greater Fort Worth conducts a Community Profile on the state of breast health every other year and re-evaluates the needs and gaps to better serve those affected by this disease.

Of the money raised by Komen Greater Fort Worth through events like the Race for the Cure®, 75 percent of the net funds stay in our four-county service area to support annual grant programs. The other 25 percent is sent to Komen Headquarters for the Komen Award and Research Grant Program, which funds research on a national level.
With your continued support, activism and participation, Komen Greater Fort Worth looks forward to further developing our leadership and service in the fight to end breast cancer. We are working diligently to save lives and build a future where breast cancer is no longer a threat to the quality or length of one’s life. We hope that you will sustain your support of Komen Greater Fort Worth activities including the 20th annual Komen Greater Fort Worth Race for the Cure on April 14th.
Sincerely,
Ann Greenhill
Executive Director
How the Komen Grant Process Works:
Komen Affiliates are individually incorporated 501c3 organizations, governed by local Boards of Directors. Komen Greater Fort Worth was incorporated on July 22, 1992. Affiliates enter into an annual agreement with Susan G. Komen for the Cure that outlines specific policies and procedures in the areas of fundraising, grant making and financial stewardship.
In order to identify gaps in services for the uninsured and underserved women and men of our four-county service area, a Community Profile assessment is undertaken every two years. This quantitative and qualitative survey creates the basis for our grant funding priorities.
Each year, our local, independent Grant Review Panel ranks grant applications submitted by 501c3 organizations in accordance with these funding priorities. The Panel’s recommendation forms a slate of Community Grants that are submitted for approval by our local Board of Directors.
Komen Greater Fort Worth is restricted to 25% or less operating expenses in any fiscal year. The remaining net income is then attributed as follows: 75% funds our local Community Grant Program and 25% funds national/international research grants.
About Komen Greater Fort Worth and Planned Parenthood:
When we send 25% of what we raise locally to Komen headquarters (as do all Komen affiliates) those dollars are specified for the Komen Research Grant Program are used only for research. In fact, Komen is the largest nongovernmental funder of breast cancer research in the world. The money that was referenced in the news that was granted to Planned Parenthood was granted by 19 of the 125 Komen affiliates across the country for mammograms and breast screening exams. Planned Parenthood is not a grantee of Komen Greater Fort Worth. When a patient at Planned Parenthood in our service area needs a mammogram, they are actually referred to a Komen Greater Fort Worth grantee for that mammogram service.
