Dear Komen Friend ,
Why Komen, you ask? Because Susan G. Komen for the Cure®, has received Charity Navigator’s highest rating of four stars for the third year in a row. Only 12 percent of the approximately 5,400 charities that Charity Navigator evaluates has received this rating.
Grantee Spotlight Did you know that we have our very own Komen Breast Health/Cancer Navigator? Our office refers people to Elia Saenz, who is a social worker at Cancer Care Services. She is available to answer questions about where to get a breast health screening, a diagnostic mammogram, or how to get help with treatment. She is bi-lingual and is also one of the nicest and most helpful people we know.
Volunteer Spotlight
Alma Roden is the model Komen activist. As a breast cancer survivor, Alma knows the importance of getting our message of early detection to the community as effectively as possible. Although she works full time, she has managed our volunteer database with great efficiency over the last four years. Alma has shared her own breast cancer story as a Komen Educator by speaking to organizations on our behalf. Alma has also served as the Volunteer Coordinator for the Race for the Cure, a job that requires managing 600 volunteers for a single event. She provides Spanish translations for us, recruits family members to volunteer, and shares her enthusiasm for Komen Tarrant County and our promise with those she meets. She truly makes a difference in our community through her volunteer service. Thank you, Alma! Volunteer today!
Grants News This past year, our Affiliate conducted a needs assessment study (Community Profile) of Tarrant County to learn more about breast health services being provided for our population with the greatest risk of breast cancer. The Profile shows that increasing the number of screening mammograms and developing new ways to deliver culturally sensitive educational messages are two of our top priorities for awarding grants. We study our community every two years to make sure that the money we raise is used where it is most needed. View Community Profile
Donor Recognition
Make a donation today.
This summer Mrs. Maria Parrish presented our affiliate with a check for $13,449.12. Maria, a member of the National Daughters of America, is the first naturalized citizen to become a member and served on the National Council. Because of her service on the Council, she was able to designate us for the donation. Thank you for thinking of Komen Tarrant County, Maria!
Our donors remain one of our greatest assets. We thank them for their generosity and trust in our efforts. The following donations were made between May 1, 2009 and August 31, 2009.

In a letter announcing the evaluation, Charity Navigator President and CEO Ken Berger said that this rating indicates Komen "consistently executes its mission in a fiscally responsible way, and outperforms most other charities in America." Berger also noted that this exceptional rating "differentiates Susan G. Komen for the Cure from its peers and demonstrates to the public it is worthy of their trust." |
