National Breast Cancer Awareness Month is recognized every October to bring a nationwide focus to the importance of prevention, early detection, and treatment of breast cancer. Ranked second only to lung cancer in the number of cancer deaths, the American Cancer Society estimates breast cancer will kill more than 40,000 women and men in 2011. More than 200,000 new cases are expected to be diagnosed this year.
Robyn Young, M.D., a medical oncologist focusing solely on breast cancer, dedicates many hours during October to teaching women and men about breast cancer. Young strongly believes that people are more likely to act on recommendations from a physician and that she must do her part in the fight against breast cancer. For each of three lunch and learn events, Dr. Young provides:
