Tracy Reed's Story

Tracy Reed, 2012 Race Chair

Tracy ReedWhen I was asked to chair the Greater Fort Worth Race for the Cure®, I was speechless. What could I have possibly done to make Komen Greater Fort Worth think I could lead such an amazing and passionate group of men and women? When I found out it would be the 20th Anniversary of the Race I was so humbled to be asked to chair such an amazing event on such a special day.

When I was about four months into the planning for this special year, I realized this was also the 20th Anniversary of my own father’s death. I was very much a Daddy’s Girl. He would have been 80 years old in the same week he died. I lost him to lung cancer that metastasized to his liver and bones.

Three years ago, my sister-in-law was diagnosed with breast cancer in both breasts that had also spread to her lymph nodes. She underwent a bilateral mastectomy and chemotherapy. Today she is cancer free and truly, one of my heroes! Read more of Tracy's story>>

I know all too well the effects of cancer. I think about my daughter and her chances of developing breast cancer, and my son and the woman he will one day marry and her chances of getting breast cancer. I think about my own chances. I became involved with the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure® for me, my daughter and all the women and men in my life! Nancy Brinker made a promise to her sister and I have made one to myself and my family! I want to make a difference; I want to find a cure. I don’t want another person to watch a loved one suffer. I don’t want another family to experience the loss of a loved one.

I had participated in the race for many years because I always believed in the cause. Though I was never personally affected by breast cancer, and no one  in my family had ever been diagnosed, I knew I was in the minority and lucky. When my sister-in-law was diagnosed, I knew it was time to step up to the plate and make a bigger commitment to the cure. I joined the committee and I joined a mission!  I was inspired, humbled, and energized. But most of all, I’m in!
